Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty procedures fall into two categories, aesthetic and reconstructive. The aesthetic procedure is purely cosmetic in nature. It is an elective procedure for someone who is unhappy with the appearance of their nose. Reconstructive rhinoplasty is sometimes called revision rhinoplasty. Reconstructive rhinoplasty can repair a bad nose job or reconstruct e nose after an injury or other traumatic event, such as cancer surgery. Some surgeons specialize in one or the other, but many are skilled in both.

Closed rhinoplasty appeals to people who are very concerned about post operative scarring. Since the incisions are made entirely inside the nostrils, there will be no external scars. Some surgeons believe that this approach lessens post op swelling and hastens recovery. They also feel that the nose returns to a normal shape more quickly. The tip of the nose can be shaped through open rhinoplasty by the use of grafts and suturing techniques. Most defects can be corrected using the closed technique.

Open rhinoplasty is achieved by making a small incision in the tissue between the nostrils, known as the columella. Yes, there will be a small scar, but it is underneath the nose and once completely healed , it is difficult to see. The surgeons who prefer this technique feel that it allows greater access to the nasal structures. They are able to peel back the skin and the underlying structures are easy to see. Both procedures can be used in almost any surgery with good results. It is a matter of surgeon and patient preference.

Surgery time is about the same with either and recovery time is similar. A typical nose job takes about an hour to two and half hours depending on the difficulty of the surgery. Both are done under general anesthesia, sometimes local anesthesia and are considered outpatient procedures. They are done at an outpatient surgery facility or in a hospital. Once recovery from the anesthetic is complete, the patient is allowed to go home to recover. Most doctors recommend that someone drive you home and stay with you for the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours.

Some eople hire a nurse for this, but a friend or family member will usually be fine provided they don't mind caring for you as you recover. There will be some bleeding post op and sometimes nausea and some people cannot handle this. In that case, a nurse is a good idea. For people who cannot bear the thought of surgery, there are non surgical techniques using injectable materials available. They consist of using manmade materials such as restylane or juvederm or the patient's own fat to smooth and contour the nose. These are often called lunch hour nose jobs. Results are immediate and bruising is one of the few side effects.

Keep in mind that these measures are temporary, lasting nine to eighteen months, but they can be repeated as needed and the cost is much lower.

Rhinoplasty cannot be classified as a simple procedure, but it is becoming increasingly common and in the hands of a skilled surgeon, your results will usually be good in a relatively short time. Permanent results are visible in as little as two weeks, although small changes can continue to occur for up to a year.
