Rhinoplasty Before And After

You've decided you just can't live with your nose any longer, so lets see how to get started on fixing it. Before rhinoplasty you need to consider a few things. What are your expectations? Will fixing the bump in your nose get you that hot guy in your office, a modeling contract, or make your life wonderful in every way? Probably not, but it can boost your self esteem quite a bit. If you are in general good health and have a realistic idea of what you want, this surgery can correct the shape and size of your nose, putting it in harmony with the rest of your features.

Find a good surgeon by research. There are many sources to find a good fit. I would go with talking to people who have had a good experience with the procedure. Many surgeons post feedback from satisfied clients. Just be sure that the one you choose is a board certified plastic surgeon. This assures that he or she has had training above and beyond normal plastic surgery and is up to date on the latest procedures.

When you go for your consultation, take pictures of noses you like. The surgeon will examine you and take photos and measurements to assure that the nose you end up with fits your face. Be sure to let the surgeon know if you have had previous nose surgery or an injury, even if it was years ago. If you have allergies or breathing difficulty this should also be discussed. Be thorough in disclosing your medical history to avoid possible complications. Diabetes, circulatory problems, smoking, family history, and taking certain medications can all increase the risk.

Once you have made the decision to go ahead with the surgery, there are some things that you need to do to prepare. Do not take aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications. The doctor will have a list of OTC products to avoid. If you smoke, plan to stop at least two weeks before your surgery and anticipate no smoking during the recovery period as it greatly increases risks of complications such as poor wound healing. Make arrangements for someone to drive you to and from the surgery and stay with you for 24 hours post operatively. Fill your prescriptions for pain medications and antibiotics. You will not feel like shlepping to the pharmacy after surgery.

Here comes the fun part. Set up a recovery area with lots of cushy pillows, books, magazines, cd's, tv, remote control, videos, and a bell or walkie talkie to ask someone to grant your every request. The practical part is having a humidifier, nasal spray, hot water bottle or heating pad and a bucket in case of vomiting. Prepare some ice packs to reduce post-op swelling. Unless you have a live in cook, you may want to prepare and freeze some meals ahead of time or stock up on easy to prepare snacks, soup, protein shakes, juice, or yogurt.

After the surgery, follow your doctors instructions carefully. Your nose and eye area will be swollen and bruised. They may be achy and your face may feel puffy. Attractive, right? Just keep your eyes on the prize. Although the swelling and bruising will increase for the first few days, it should subside after the first week. Usually a splint is applied and sometimes the nose is packed for 2-6 days. Ice packs over the eyes decrease discomfort and swelling. Your doctor will remove packing and splints at your first post-op appointment in a week or so. A small amount of bleeding is normal, but if it increses suddenly, call the doctor.Keep your head elevated while sleeping to minimize swelling. Eat a healthy diet to speed healing and avoid any activity that requires bending or lifting. This is where your faithful friend, spouse or boyfriend comes in. Take advantage of a little pampering.

The final result of your rhinoplasty will be apparent in about two weeks, but small changes may occur over the next six to twelve months. Most people return to work in 10 days-3 weeks wearing makeup. There are actually sites that give you tips on makeup application. How handy is that? Once your new nose has healed, you'll look like you, only better.
