African American Rhinoplasty
African American rhinoplasty falls into the category of ethnic rhinoplasty. Ethnic rhinoplasty is much more common than in years past. It is much more socially acceptable these days to change your personal appearance, particularly for people of different ethnicities. There are surgeons who specialize in this particular type of surgery. African Americans tend to have different nasal characteristics than Caucasions. Most of these patients have no desire to "look white." They just want a more refined look to their noses without losing their ethnicity. The trick is finding a surgeon who understands this and will work with them to achieve the desired results.
The African American patient typically has thicker skin, shorter and wider nasal bones, and minimal definition to the tip of the nose. Their general desires are to narrow the nostrils, lift the bridge of the nose, and refine the tip. This requires removing sections of the base of the nostrils, and tiny sections at the tip and using grafts to support the structure of the nose. Thicker skin sometimes causes the healing process to be longer. There is also a greater risk of edema and some scarring. Some doctors feel that the use of bleaching creams prior to the surgery helps to prevent scarring. Many celebrities have had subtle changes to their noses. Halle Berry, Oprah, Beyonce, and L'il Kim are just a few. These women still have their ethnic character. Michael Jackson, on the other hand looks like a completely different person. He looked a hundred times better brfore he got caught up in excessive plastic surgery.
In choosing a surgeon, you should look for someone who does a large number of ethnic surgeries, African American, Asian, Hispanic, and middle Europeon. Techniques that have been used for years on Caucasion patients must be modified to serve the ethnic patient. Many doctors use computer imaging to determine what the final outcome will be. This is very helpful in demonstrating that the change need not be drastic to be an improvement. A lot of surgeons feel that ethnic rhinoplasty is a specialty and many do only these types procedures. There are hundreds of sources to find someone you can trust, but word of mouth is powerful. A lot of surgical sites also have testimonials from patients and a gallery of before and after photos to aid you in making a choice.
Think about what you really hope to achieve and do your homework. Interview several surgeons until you find one who suits your needs and your outcome should be positive.
